Kagawa has developed some unique Urushi(漆/lacquerware) techniques including Choshitsu(彫漆/layered lacquer carving). This is the technique to create patterns by carving multiple layered colored lacquers.
Sazanami Shikki(lacquerware), owned by lacquer artist Akira Takemori continues creating lacquerwares in hopes of spreading lacquer, and familiarizing them to our lives.
There will be two beginner friendly projects for experiencing Kagawa’s traditional lacquerware crafts;
One is the public live lacquerware making under the Marugame-machi Shopping Arcade dome. We will create Seto-Inland Sea motif board by polishing the layered lacquer surface. Walk-in participation is very welcome, and anyone can participate in this project for free.
Another one will be at WeBase TAKAMATSU. Using the same method as the art board making, create your own accessories with some lacquer pieces.
Find your own pieces and enjoy polishing them into your own unique shape.
