About Setouchi Triennale

The Setouchi Triennale is a contemporary art festival that takes place once every three years on 12 islands and two ports in the Seto Inland Sea, in spring, summer, and autumn.
Its theme is the Restoration of the Sea, and it aims to revitalize the Setouchi island communities that once thrived in this beautiful natural environment and to transform the region into a Sea of Hope for the rest of the world. This is the 4th Setouchi Triennale, exhibiting 213 artworks from 32 countries and regions and staging 35 events.

About Shukusai

The Setouchi Triennale is held every three years. Wishing to extend the warm hospitality of Takamatsu Marugame-machi shopping street to guests visiting from Japan and around the world, we planned “Come to Ship’s Cat + kame3 2019 Festival -Takamatsu Marugame-machi Shotengai [Shopping Street]”.The shopping street will have the feel of an art gallery, with contemporary artist Kenji Yanobe’s public art (Ship’s Cat series, etc.) exhibited here and there inviting visitors to experience art in a familiar, everyday setting. We hope you will take part in the numerous events on offer, including art, music, food, workshops by students of Kagawa University, a stamp rally, and a photo contest.

Contemporary artist Kenji Yanobe’s “guardian deity of travel” objet d’art with its adorable facial expression brings good luck. Its motif is the “sailor cat” who in the Age of Discovery traveled the world with humans, a companion who comforted and healed those who sailed on ships and protected ships and cargo from pests and disaster. Ship’s Cat represents a spirit of adventure, a strong, resilient spirit, and the courage to face the challenges of a turbulent world.

About WeBase Takamatsu

A new type of accommodation combining a hotel and a hostel opened in December 2018 at the Kawaramachi entrance to theTakamatsu Marugame-machi Shopping Street. Based on the concept of “Encourage young people of the world to go traveling!”, the aim is to create a totally new kind of facility (community hostel & hotel) where the staff play a role as a hub that connects guests and local people.
Through events such as music, food and art at the 2019 Triennale, the local residents together with students of Kagawa University hope to project the charm of Takamatsu Marugame-machi Shopping Street both within and beyond Japan’s shores.
